Breakdowns was commissioned by the British Library and Comica as part of Art and Anarchy, the UK’s biggest ever comics exhibition held at the British Library in summer 2014.
The project’s co-producers were The Platform Theatre at Central Saint Martins, Comica, The British Library, The Club, run by Jennifer Tuckett and Amman Paul Singh Brar, and Conducttr, a transmedia storyteller.
Over six months, students on the MA Dramatic Writing and Foundation in Performance worked to develop Breakdowns, an experiment in transmedia and digital storytelling.
The title and concept of the pieces is inspired by Art Spiegelman’s Breakdowns, an experimentation in comic form whose subtitle is “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@8!
Breakdowns offered student writers each their own moment to experiment with the possibilities of transmedia and digital storytelling over a 5 day experiment, alongside an over-arching narrative.
